Deputy Dean Aggarwal Named FINRA Academic Fellow

Deputy Dean Reena Aggarwal has been named an Academic Fellow at the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority.  FINRA CEO Mary Shapiro made the announcement during a September 26th speech at Georgetown University as part of the Center for Business and Public Policy Distinguished Speaker Series.  Dr. Aggarwal will consult and advise FINRA staff on emerging regulatory issues.

Dean Aggarwal is a Stalkamp Fellow and Professor of Finance at Georgetown University, as well as a Faculty Associate for the Center for Business and Public Policy.  She has been named among "Outstanding Faculty" in the Business Week Guide to the Best Business Schools.

After announcing Dr. Aggarwal's appointment, Ms. Shapiro discussed major trends in Financial Markets Regulation to a gathering of some fifty academics, students, policymakers, business leaders and press at Georgetown's historic Riggs Library.  She touched on cross-border regulation, collaborative investor protection across regulatory agencies, and the increasing fraud risk to senior investors.

Ms. Shapiro served as Chairman and CEO of the National Association of Securities Dealers before the organization merged with the regulatory arm of the New York Stock Exchange in July 2007 to form FINRA.  She also served as an SEC Commissioner under President Ronald Reagan, President George H.W. Bush and President Bill Clinton.

FINRA is the largest non-governmental regulator for securities firms doing business in the United States, overseeing nearly 5,100 brokerage firms, about 174,000 branch offices and more than 672,000 registered securities representatives.  The organization also performs market regulation for The NASDAQ Stock Market, the American Stock Exchange, the International Securities Exchange and the Chicago Climate Exchange.
